Keep Your Scalp Moist!

Ok women, I have been asked what products can we use to grow their hair. First, understand that your hair will grow automatically because it’s design to grow. Hair grows from the root and fed by a blood vessel which nourishes it to grow. Each person’s hair goes through the four stages: anagen (growing phase), catagen (regression phase), telogen (resting phase) and exogen (shedding phase).

Now that you understand how the hair growing phases work let’s talk about a couple of questions I was asked which is why when some women take out their sew-in weave or extensions their hair start off long and full but after wearing it down for a few months tend to shed, break off and even stop growing. The other question is why when wearing a sew-in weave or extensions do the perimeter/leave-out breaks off. Leave-out first, there are several reasons why the hair left out around the perimeter may break;

  • over processing with edge control and gels,

  • heat

  • color

  • brushing the fine or course hair roughly against the braids or tracks (very important)

  • simply neglect

  • Be careful not to over manipulate your edges or hairline. Repeated pulling on the hairline will cause Traction alopecia which is a gradual hair loss and weakens your edges.

So lets tackle the other question. Whether you wear your hair natural or not you want to make sure your hair is hydrated with a daily moisturizer, moisturizing lotion or leave in conditioner. Now those wearing sew-in weaves should do this process a little different. Because your natural hair is underneath added hair or in a braid you want to be careful of the amount of moisture used to prevent mildew and mold. Gross! But the crazy thing is the mildew and mold will not prevent your hair from growing, you will however, be a stinky mess and did I mention you will suffer hair loss from the matting and maybe scalp irritation.

Wash your hair! (Weekly recommendation)

I recommend washing your hair weekly, however, bi-weekly is okay.

Lets talk products! Remember when we wore “jery curls”? Yep, that kind of moisture but not the messy drippy stuff. Think about it, we put the curl activator in our hair everyday and even though the product buildup made us think the dirtier our hair was the better it grew. When in fact it was the moisture our hair and roots was drinking that caused it to grow so consistently.

Below are 3 things I suggest for Maintaining Moisture in Natural and Processed Hair for Maximum Growth

1. Curl Activator (Soft Sheen Carson, Care Free Curl Gold, Instant Activator).

Moisten your hair, preferably in the morning that way by the end of the day when its time for bed your hair is not wet. I would suggest Curl Activator for the natural twist looks and hairstyles. It can be difficult to curl your hair with this product. Now, you may have to take precaution by placing a towel over your pillow case and washing it more frequently. Tips for bed:

  • Silk headscarf/scarves – helps keep the hair from drying out – protects and trains the edges – keeps the hairs from frizzing and laid down in the same direction of the cuticle

  • satin hair bonnet – helps retain moisture

  • Cotton headscarves and pillow cases rob your hair of moisture

2. Daily Moisturizer lotion, leave-in conditioners and moisturizing oils. (Design Essentials, Natural Daily Moisturizing Lotion). The Difference between a moisturizing oil and sealing oil is that some oils penetrate the shaft and other oils cannot. Be careful not to clog your scalp. Use moisturizing oil on the scalp and sealing oil on the hair itself.

  • Coconut oil – virgin is best and can be used as a moisturizer and a sealant. Use it with a moisturizer or water based leave in conditioner.

  • Olive Oil- penetrates the hair shaft and moisturizes the hair and scalp. Use it with a water base leave in.

  • Design Essentials - Natural daily moisturizing lotion

  • Design Essentials - leave in conditioner

  • It's A 10

A moisturizing oil is an oil that is used to penetrate the shaft of the hair and actually moisturize it. Not all oils can do so. The oils that can not penetrate the hair shaft are best used to seal the hair and lock the moisture in. Also it is best not to use sealing oils on your scalp. Think about you will be sealing your scalp causing it to become clogged. A moisturizing oil is best applied to the scalp to help it stimulate growth. Here’s a quick list to help differentiate the two types of oils, and which you should be using when.

3. Avoid Unnatural Products

Avoid anything unnatural and foriegn:

  • Chemicals

  • Colors and dyes

  • Styling tools
