Understand how Iron Deficiency causes hair loss.

Iron

The medical definition of "iron" is an essential mineral needed for the transport of oxygen (via hemoglobin in red blood cells) and for oxidation by cells (via cytochrome).

Deficiency or Iron is a common cause of anemia and when it is too low can and usually causes health problems. When I was diagnosed with "Iron Deficiency Anemia" I had to receive iron injections which took several months to be at a normal level. My doctor educated me about how the iron had to first nourish my bone marrow before it will replenish my body. My hair shedded for months as well as I had other health issues.

Solutions

I ate more iron-rich foods and took an iron supplement with my other vitamins.

Although most iron-rich foods are red meats such as beef and liver, there are other animal proteins such as chicken, pork, fish and shellfish. The body absorbs iron better from an animal source food, as a vegetarian I ate and still eat lots of greens like spinach and dark leafy green vegetables; lentils and beans; tofu; dried fruits and drink prune and beet juice.

Good sources of vitamin C are red peppers, which helps the body absorb iron.

Hair

Select a supplement that has iron, plus healthy hair nutrients such as Zinc, marine extracts and Biotin.
